MonNatura Delta de l’Ebre Wins Award For Responsible Tourism In Catalonia

In October 2013, MonNatura Delta were awarded a very important prize for responsible tourism in Catalonia. Both travellers and companies involved in the tourism industry nominate companies for this award. MonNatura Delta won it for the category of: Best natural heritage management and protection of the environment through tourism.

What Is MonNatura Delta?

MonNatura Delta is under the umbrella of the La Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera (La Pedrera Catalonia Foundation) which was born in January 2013. The La Pedrera Catalonia Foundation aims to respond to our new social reality, and their mission is to work pro-actively for the social transformation and development of Catalonia.

There are 5 major areas of focus:

  1. Territory and environment
  2. Social
  3. Culture
  4. Food
  5. Knowledge and research

MonNatura Delta de l’Ebre is one element of the foundation, and it allows you to discover the Delta’s natural environment in ways that educate and promote responsible tourism.

The main three areas of focus are:

  1. Salt fishing
  2. Traditional fishing
  3. Bird watching

The foundation has already restored the old Tancada saltworks fish farm, which is an area of 41.2 hectares. Its environmental importance has been highlighted in an interpretation centre, where visitors can learn how to explore and appreciate the lagoons.

MonNatura Suggested Family Activities

There are complete guided tours around the Delta, via a circuit that passes all of the areas that make up the biodiversity that can be enjoyed there. The visit also takes in the Interpretation Centre – Espai Delta. By taking this tour you will be able to fully appreciate the immense personality that is the Delta de l’Ebre, its wonderful plant and animal life and its huge environmental importance.

You will also spend time at the Mirador 360º which is close to the Espai Delta and affords superb viewpoints over the area. From there you can see the flamingos the old Sant Antoni saltworks, the Tancada lagoon and the Trabucador point.

Next you will go to the hide to observe the old salt flats at Sant Antoni and its important fauna. Then the tour goes to the area where you can see the fish farm’s restored pools, where endangered species can be seen. Afterwards you will learn about the traditional fishing methods, plus you can then take a punt (which is an ancient boat of the Ebro Delta) sailing.
