Passion of Cervera – La Passió de Cervera

passion of cervera cataloniaAccording to studies which have been conducted by the University of Sorbonne in Paris, the beginning of these historic performances can be dated back to the 15th century which would make them the oldest in Europe. In 1481 there are notes in a municipal book, which is preserved in the archives, which details the payment of salaries to get the scaffold built to represent the mystery of the Passion.

Another text which is preserved in the county’s archive County, from 1534 , describes the actors names, and almost all of the priests were playing female characters. Today the performers are no longer priests but the townspeople, as is the case is many other towns, but what hasn’t changed down through the ages is the importance and attraction of the Passion. There are chronicles from the Middle Ages which describe the representations of the Passion as attracting “innumerable crowds of people of all classes and from distant lands.”

After the Spanish Civil War, the people of Cervera showed their devotion and love of their traditions and customs, among them the Passion. Two young local poets, Emili Rabell and JM Sarrate, wrote a new script, which was more faithful to the Gospels, and in accordance with the new scenery techniques also. During Lent of 1940, the Passion opened with extraordinary success.

la passio de cerveraBy 1967 the Passion had moved to the Gran Teatro de La Passion de Cervera , with seating for 2,200 spectators,  and because of this, its popularity and number of performances, the Passion of Cervera had between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators each season.

Because of its social and historical importance , in 1969 it was declared of Public Interest by the Ministry of Information and Tourism.

This has driven the players to have even more pride (if possible) than before and more success, and both the staging and script have undergone lots of improvements. The attention to detail is superb , and it is spectacular representation of the Passion.
