Festa Romeus a Monistrol de Montserrat
Festa Romeus a Monistrol de Montserrat – Romeus Festival at Monistrol of Montserrat – 20th January
Festival Date: 20-01-2016
20th January is the feast of San Sebastian in the town dating from the 15th century and this festival opens the gates of the town and its history to visitors and locals. The Festa Romeus a Monistrol de Montserrat Romeo is a celebration that introduces some of the history of the town. Visitors are invited to travel back in time and to become pilgrims. It’s a chance to dive into the 16th century Monistrol period, a time of the dreaded plague and during the building of the churches of St. Peter and St. Mary Monistrol Montserrat. These are some important events that mark the history of the town.
During the festivals there are different representations to recreate the Renaissance period in the village, and also the effects of the plague. There are also games, workshops and activities and of course partying. At that time there were, of course, no medical remedies available and this meant that the townspeople had to ask for the intercession of the Saints and the Church. San Sebastian (Saint Sebastian) was revered here, as he was everywhere, as a healer of the plague and other infectious illnesses.
